TCM: A Proven Therapy for Immune Support
Have you ever wondered how acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) benefit the immune system?
In this article, we’ll explore the TCM perspective on the immune system: how it can help your body fight pathogens, and also modulate an overactive immune system, resulting in allergies and autoimmune disease.
What is Wei Qi?
Qi is the vital life force that flows throughout the body. Wei Qi (pronounced “way chee”) is a specific type of Qi that forms the body’s first line of defense against pathogens. Often referred to as the body’s “protective energy,” Wei Qi circulates primarily in the outer layers of the body, like the skin and muscles, acting as a barrier to external invaders such as viruses, bacteria, and environmental pollutants.
When Wei Qi is strong, the body can defend itself more effectively against pathogens. Conversely, when Wei Qi is weak or stagnant, the body becomes more susceptible to colds, flu, and other infections.
How TCM Benefits the Immune System
Acupuncture: A Tool for Immune Regulation
When a patient asks for help to strengthen their immune system, an acupuncturist will often target the Wei Qi, which is closely related to the Lungs in TCM. We’ll often select points that support Lung function to boost the immune system and tonify the Wei Qi.
Research has shown that acupuncture can improve immune function by influencing the autonomic nervous system and modulating the production of immune cells like T-lymphocytes, macrophages, and natural killer (NK) cells. Additionally, acupuncture helps reduce inflammation and stress, both of which are factors that can suppress immune function.1
Chinese Herbs: Natural Immune Support
TCM offers a vast array of herbs known to strengthen the body’s defenses and improve overall health. Many of these herbs are specifically used to bolster Wei Qi and protect against external pathogens. Some of the most well-known immune-boosting herbs include:
- Astragalus Root (Huang Qi): Astragalus is one of the most important herbs for strengthening Wei Qi. It’s been traditionally used to prevent colds and respiratory infections and is also known for its ability to stimulate the production of white blood cells, which play a key role in immune defense.2
- Siler Root (Fang Feng): Siler enhances the body’s ability to fight airborne pathogens, and boosts its defenses against pollutants, germs, and seasonal change. It’s a great remedy for cold-related headaches, body aches and chills, and is also traditionally used to aid the function of the liver and spleen.
- Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang): Ginger is one of the most important herbs in TCM pharmacology, and is often added to a formula to harmonize the effects of the other herbs. Additionally, ginger has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and can bring down a fever and reduce pain. A simple infusion of hot water and fresh ginger is an easy immune booster!
Modulating the Immune System: TCM for Autoimmune Conditions and Allergies
While TCM is often associated with boosting immune defenses, it also offers benefits when the body’s immune response is too strong or misdirected, as in allergies and autoimmune diseases.
- Autoimmune Diseases: In autoimmune conditions, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues. TCM views this as a condition of hyperactive function and excess heat. Acupuncture can correct these imbalances by regulating organ function and reducing inflammation.
- Allergies: TCM views allergies as an imbalance in the body’s defensive system (Wei Qi) and internal organs, particularly the lungs and spleen. Acupuncture can reduce the severity and frequency of allergic reactions, and minimize symptoms of seasonal allergies, such as sneezing and nasal congestion. Additionally, Soliman’s Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT) is a technique that retrains the brain to stop reacting to a harmless substance, effectively putting food, environmental, or other types of allergies into remission.

TCM’s Holistic Approach: Beyond Immunity
TCM’s approach to immunity is not just about preventing illness—it’s about creating a balanced, resilient body. This holistic approach takes into account lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, emotional health, and physical activity.
Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a unique and comprehensive way to enhance immune function. By focusing on the balance of Qi, especially Wei Qi, and using tools like acupuncture and herbs, TCM helps the body defend itself against infections, manage autoimmune conditions, and reduce the impact of allergies. Whether you’re looking to bolster your immune system during cold and flu season or seeking ways to regulate an overactive immune response, TCM can offer valuable support for long-term health and vitality.
